In the quiet fields of Gadag, Karnataka, a 53-year-old farmer’s life took an unexpected turn.

Once known for his hard work and independence, he began to feel progressive weakness in all four limbs. Neck pain became constant.

Cycling to the market and working in the fields became impossible. Walking turned into a battle against stiffness, until he eventually became bed-bound.

Upon evaluation, the diagnosis was serious—Cervical Pott’s Spine with C4 to C7 epidural abscess causing severe spinal cord compression. Without urgent treatment, permanent paralysis was inevitable.
(ಪರಿಶೀಲನೆ ಮಾಡಿದಾಗ ಗಂಭೀರ ಸತ್ಯ ಬಹಿರಂಗವಾಯಿತು—ಸರ್ವೈಕಲ್ ಪಾಟ್ಸ್ ಸ್ಪೈನ್, C4 ರಿಂದ C7 ರವರೆಗೆ ಎಪಿಡುರಲ್ ಆಬ್ಸೆಸ್, ಇದರಿಂದ ಮೆದುಳಿನ ಕಡ್ಡಿಗೆ ತೀವ್ರ ಒತ್ತಡ. ತಕ್ಷಣ ಚಿಕಿತ್ಸೆ ನೀಡದಿದ್ದರೆ ಶಾಶ್ವತ ಅಂಗವಿಕಲತೆ ತಪ್ಪದೇ ಇತ್ತು.)

 

At this crucial moment, Dr. Sharad Shirol, leading orthopedician of Gadag practicing at Sarojini Shirol Hospital, recognized the urgency and referred him to the neurosurgical team. He also joined the surgery.

The patient underwent C5–C6 corpectomy, evacuation of the cold abscess, and fixation with an expandable titanium cage. The surgery lasted 3 hours.
(ರೋಗಿಗೆ C5–C6 ಕರ್ಪೆಕ್ಟಮಿ, ಶೀತಪೂಯವನ್ನು ತೆಗೆದುಹಾಕುವುದು, ಮತ್ತು ಎಕ್ಸ್‌ಪಾಂಡಬಲ್ ಟೈಟೇನಿಯಂ ಕೇಜ್ ಅಳವಡಿಸುವ ಶಸ್ತ್ರಚಿಕಿತ್ಸೆ ಮಾಡಲಾಯಿತು. ಶಸ್ತ್ರಚಿಕಿತ್ಸೆ 3 ಗಂಟೆಗಳ ಕಾಲ ನಡೆಯಿತು.)

 

The result was nothing short of dramatic. Within weeks, the man who had been bedridden was walking independently—without pain, without weakness.

After completing one year of Anti-Tubercular Treatment (ATT), he is now fully independent—back to farming and cycling.
